These were the final words of Pierre-Cédric Bonin. They are the words the media loves to chew on—sensational, tragic, and perfect for a headline. Most outlets look at the transcript of Air France 447 and see a story of individual incompetence. They see a young pilot pulling back on the stick while the plane screams at him that it is stalling. They see a crew that forgot how to fly.
They are wrong.
The "lazy consensus" in aviation reporting is to blame the meat-ware in the cockpit the moment things go sideways. It’s easy. It’s comforting. If it’s just "pilot error," then the system is fine, the planes are perfect, and we just need better training. But the 228 souls lost in the Atlantic on June 1, 2009, weren’t victims of a bad pilot. They were victims of a catastrophic design philosophy that prioritizes automation over human intuition until the very second that automation fails and demands the human be a hero.
We need to stop talking about the "three last words" and start talking about the three decades of engineering arrogance that made those words inevitable.
The Pitot Tube Fallacy
